A great book to use during a community helper theme, Hard Working Puppies, helps students with subtraction. The book begins with ten dogs, but one by one all the dogs are needed in the community.




Felt Board
Standard: K-2 The student will demonstrate through the mathematical processes an emerging sense of quality and numeral relationships, sets, and place values.

Indicator: K-2.4 Represent simple joining and separating situations through 10.

Materials:

Hard Working Puppies

Felt outline for puppy- A simple outline for a puppy, you will need 10.

Procedures:
1. The teacher will first read Hard Working Puppies.
2. After reading the book, the teacher will use the felt pieces as examples as she goes through each problem that was presented. For example, if there were 10 dogs and the firefighter took a dog to help him, how many dogs are left?
3. The teacher will place the felt puppies on the felt board with a copy of Hard Working Puppies.
4.The teacher will encourage the students to use the pieces in the center to create their own math sentences.
